Bai Hao (Oriental Beauty)

Price range: $22 through $42

One of the most famous teas of Taiwan, Bai Hao, also known as Oriental Beauty is a particularly challenging tea to source every year. Bai Hao is one of the “bug bitten” teas that are known for its distinct fruity notes and honey sweetness. The quality of leaf and flavor depends on an almost symbiotic relationship between the tea farmer and the leaf hopper insect which bites the tea leaves during certain times of the year, initiating a chemical reaction in the plant. This reaction along with careful processing of the tea leaves by the farmer yields the distinctive characteristics of Bai Hao Oolong.

This years Bai Hao is an exceptionally sweet, high-grade tea that has just the right amount of roast to balance and round out its fruity notes. The abundance of downy leaves also help bring out the honey and orchid like notes. A truly enjoyable tea.

Oolong Tea

Oolong teas are made from distinct tea plant varietals grown primarily in China and Taiwan. Their unmistakable flavor profiles are based on growing region, individual farmers’ production methods, and complex, multi-layered processing techniques. Oolongs provide a wide scope of flavor profiles; sweet and fruity, woody and roasted, or green and fresh, all depending on the region and style of production. Not simply “somewhere between black and green tea", oolongs offer a world of exploration and pleasure.
